Exposition: Santiago is a old and wrinkly man. He acts like the father of Manolin. They are both poor. Santiago has a boat and hasn't caught a fish in 84 days, which makes eating really hard for him. Manolin is very thoughtful of Santiago because he gets enough food for them to survive. Manolin also looks up to Santiago. They love baseball and the ocean. One day, Santiago leaves Manolin on the shore, while Santiago would go out in the ocean to try and catch some fish. The great part is that Santiago told Manolin that he was leaving so that Manolin wouldn't be sad and mad.

Why did Santiago want to go out to sea and catch fish?
Santiago went out to sea to catch fish because he wanted respect and he didn't want to be known as too old for fishing. Back then, he said that he was wrestling a negro and won. He got respect after that, so he wants respect again but this time, for fishing. He doesn't want to say that he is old, so to prove that he is still strong and that he wasn't too old for fishing, he went out to fish to prove them wrong.

Who is the Great DiMaggio and why is baseball so important in his book?
Joe DiMaggio was on the Yankees team baseball team. He was an all-star player in all of his exciting 13 seasons of baseball. Everyone calls him "The Great DiMaggio." The reason why baseball is so important in the book, "The Old Man and the Sea," is because it represents Santiago's childhood, and because Santiago looks up to DiMaggio, because he is strong and courageous. When Santiago was a child he probably read about baseball and he might have been the biggest fan of the Great DiMaggio.

Lion- The lion represents Santiago's childhood. Since he traveled a lot back when he was young, he would go to Africa and he would watch the lions play as young cats. He is similar to the lions because he used to play like the lions would when they would play like young playful cats. Lions are fierceful and strong, and they are the hunters just like Santiago is trying to hunt down the big fish. The lions are playing like young cats to make themselves feel young again just like Santiago doesn't want to remind himself that he is old. The lions and Santiago are different because lions are animals and Santiago is a human being.
Setting- the place that someone or something is surrounded by.
The story takes place in Havana, Cuba on the ocean.
It is important to know where the setting is in a book or in a movie because it helps the reader picture what the ocean might look like and where the characters are. It helps because if the reader does not know where the characters are, it would leave their minds blank.
The story takes place during the 1940's which is about the time that Santiago is old.
This affects the story's development in a way that it can help the reader to picture and see all the wonderful descriptions in their head, instead of having a blank mind of what's happening and what is this place that they are at. "The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man could see the other boats, low on the water and well in toward the shore, spread out across the current." (Page 32)
