Racism
Racism is when one race offends another race or when one race makes fun of the other race's beliefs.
Examples of Racism in Society
Past 1940-1960's
Martin Luther King Jr. was a man who wished for all people of different colors and races were to be treated as equals. In 1963 he gave his famous speech, "I Had a Dream," at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. During the speech, he explained how people should be judges by their character and not how they look. About 250,000 marched with Martin Luther King Jr and stood up for their rights. A year later, President Johnson passed a law for banning all racial discrimination.
This event displayed racism because it showed how people of different colors were treated then, they were referred to as different people. No one would give them service because of how they looked and they were banned from parks, shops, and even restrooms. It was really interesting to read about how one man could make a big change, since he stood up for what he knew was right. In my opinion, Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man and he had a goal and went for it. I don't think that handling the situation differently would've worked as well. What Martin Luther King Jr said on that day changed a lot in society.

Present 2000-2014
A man named Oscar Grant got shot by a police officer (Johannes Mehserle) on a bus. This was on January 1, 2009 early in the morning. The reason that the police officer shot Oscar Grant was because he was black. Oscar Grant, the police officer (Johannes Mehserle), and everyone on the bus was in the situation. It may not seem as if the others that were on the bus were involved, but they were because people on the bus probably took videos of the shooting and pictures.
This event involves racism because it showed that Oscar Grant was shot by a police officer just for being black. When I first heard about this story, I was shocked because it's not right to shoot someone on a bus just for being a different color/race. This could have been handled in a way that the police officer could kindly ask the man to leave the bus, but it is still wrong to do that, so he shouldn't even bother going up to Oscar Grant. After the shooting, Oscar had his funeral and then he had a movie created based on his life. A lot of people were sad and mad because of the incident. What happened on that day was a change for many people around the world. Hopefully no one would do something like that again.
